Advocacy: Comprehensive Sex Education

“Sex Ed” is always a subject that creates strong emotions in parents. Given that we are a diverse, public school, we ask that Forest Hills Public Schools leave the emotions out and implement Comprehensive Sex Education. The current curriculum is not adequate for the realities our students’ encounter. From the Michigan Organization for Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH):

Students need medically accurate, research-informed, developmentally-appropriate, non-shaming, trauma- informed, inclusive, and affirming sexual health education in line with emerging best practices (i.e., comprehensive sex ed).

Compared to young people who receive abstinence-only education, young people who receive comprehensive sexual health education are more likely to delay when they first have sex, have protected sex, and protect themselves from STIs, unintended pregnancy, and other adverse health outcomes.

We support the full inclusion and equitable treatment of young people in all aspects of society in a manner both cognizant and respectful of their gender identity and sexual orientation. Specifically, we support the implementation of inclusive and affirming sexual health education and services in schools and healthcare facilities to improve the mental and physical health of LGBTQ+ youth. Non-discrimination and other protective policies at the school-district-level which ensure LGBTQ+ youth safety are essential to improve the mental and physical well-being of all students.

What would this look like at Forest Hills Public Schools?

  1. FHPS adopts true, comprehensive Sex Education for all our students.

  2. Open, well -advertised, and recorded meetings of the State-of-Michigan-required district “Sexual Education Advisory Board”

  3. FHPS adopts a Non-Binary and Transgender Policy for District (example)
Model Local Education Agency Policy on Transgender and Nonbinary Students

  4. Use inclusive language in health education classes

  5. Allow staff to include pronouns in their email signatures
